1969 East Greenland Expedition

An uninvited guest to my 17th birthday celebration; we'd seen the bear swim up the fjord, but not return.
That night we kept a watch, and at 5 in the morning were more than a little concerned to see the bear approaching our camp.
We didn't have any weapons with which to defend ourselves, apart from a hastily collected pile of stones.
I'm not sure that they would help much against a hungry polar bear.
Fortunately, about fifty metres from camp, the bear headed down to the fjord and swam gracefully away.
