Thane colony, Bombay, October 5, 1991

Space is definitely at a premium in Bombay. Hundreds of impoverished families arrive daily from the poor rural countryside, in the hope of finding work and improving their lot. (Many are surprisingly successful in this aim.) They live on the streets or in colonies such as this one situated on the city outskirts.

Because of the high-price of Bombay apartments - comparable to those of New York or Tokyo - it is not unusual to find someone with a respectable job (a bank clerk, for instance) returning home after a day's work to accommodations like these.
